BCM325 – DA PITCH

My digital artefact is likely to be a podcast.

This podcast will involve talking to different creatives about their processes, their style, their thoughts  and commentary on their industry, and hopefully some good banter.

This podcast will involve preparing for each episode by researching some interesting topics to talk about and engaging with the creative(s) in question about their respective craft.

I’m aiming for the podcast to be 45 minutes to an hour long, hopefully on a fortnightly schedule. I don’t know yet what I will do in terms of platform.

  1. Hi Nathan,

This digital artefact is an interesting approach to the idea of “the future”, but I think it has great potential for social utility and particularly, personal utility in your case. At first, I was a little confused as to how this artefact would be addressing the criteria of this brief. However, I am interested in the way you will be looking at the past as a way of projection into the future, and the emergent trends that have consequentially developed through this transition.

In a university setting with many people also trying to get their “foot in the door” in this industry, I think looking to the future practices for creatives provides a very useful tool for current students to get an insight into real world experience. For you particularly, already working in this area, I think this will be very useful for you to further network with creatives and look at future trends which may help shape your own work.

Podcast as a medium is a great idea, however it might also be useful to include some graphics or links to the work of these creatives, as this is quite a visual dynamic and may be easier for listeners to visualise the craft of your interviewees. One way you could improve this pitch would to be looking at a timeframe for this project and perhaps a quota for the number of podcasts you hope to create. Will it be on a weekly basis etc.? I am also interested in how you hope to develop an audience and receive feedback on your iterations. Perhaps reddit? (even though they can be quite savage over there). Maybe the BCM325 hashtag is a kinder place to start. I look forward to seeing this project develop over the next semester.

  2. You have certainly chosen an interesting topic, and one close to my own heart as someone who has chosen to go back to university so as to keep up with the changing world of graphic design. However, I think you might need to consider what you mean by ‘Creative’. Are you focusing on writers/journalists, visual artists, designers, game development or simply the entire industry? I only ask as narrowing down to one particular creative industry would allow for you to really get deep into what is in store for the future as far as technology goes. Every industry is changing, and rapidly, but many are changing for different reasons. With Graphic design, the mediums with which we use to create content have changed dramatically to allow for more online content that can includes iPhone and android phones. Animation has changed now as we no longer use hand drawn images, but instead digitally drawn pictures or 3D animation. I am sure you get the idea. I think talking to a few people already in the industry is a wonderful idea as it will give up to date information to other students looking to find work in these industries and help prepare them a little better as to what is needed of them now. Get them to impart some words of wisdom onto the next generation. Not really knowing which way you will go with this yet I can only offer a few links that might be helpful when creating questions, these are mainly to do with how the journalism industry is changing and how some legacy media outlets are dying slowly. https://www.thoughtco.com/adapting-in-the-age-of-digital-news-consumption-2074132, https://www.politico.com/magazine/story/2018/05/13/denver-post-profits-newspaper-industry-218360 , https://www.journalism.org/fact-sheet/newspapers/ . Was trying to find the most recent information out there, unfortunately I had a bit of an issue finding anything from within Australia, so I hope this helps a little.

  3. This digital artifact pitch has really intrigued me. Rather than going the conventional route of discussing a set digital artifact and exploring how it would affect our future society, your idea of focusing on the creative process of digital artifacts. Admittedly when I first watched the pitch, I wondered how it would fit into the criteria of the assignment, but I believe that addressing the creative process directly for your digital artifact has a lot of potential for an intriguing and informative piece.

I am interested to see what sort of artists and creative personalities you will be interviewing in your podcasts. Because we primarily interact with other artists in a university environment, it can be difficult to find artists that have different methods and processes. I would recommend that when searching for artists to interview, try expanding your search outside of the university or your friend group, as you suggested in the video. Search for people of different age groups, backgrounds, education; But try to find artists from the same or similar industries. By having a focused sector, you can explore the different processes and approaches that artists have to the same task.

I hope you found this helpful. I love your DA pitch, and you are going to do great, can’t wait to see where you go with it.
